Solar panels on your roof convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter converts this into alternating current (AC) that your appliances use. In an on-grid system, any surplus electricity can be exported to the grid through a net meter, and you draw from the grid at night or when solar generation is low.

It depends mainly on how many units (kWh) you use each month and how much shadow-free roof space you have. As a broad guide, 1 kW of panels in Uttar Pradesh may generate roughly 3.5–4.5 units a day, depending on orientation, shading and season. The main factors are system capacity, the type and brand of panels and inverter, the mounting structure (standard or elevated), roof type and height, cable lengths, metering and approval charges, and any battery storage. Eligible residential customers may also be able to reduce their net cost through government schemes.

Eligible residential customers may receive central financial assistance for rooftop solar under the Government of India's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, and state-level support may also apply. Eligibility, amounts and procedures are set by the official scheme guidelines and can change, so please check the official portal or ask our team for the current position. Commercial and industrial installations are generally not covered by residential subsidy schemes.

• On-grid: connected to the electricity grid, usually without batteries. Surplus power can be exported through net metering. It typically does not supply power during a grid outage.
• Off-grid: works independently of the grid using batteries to store energy, suited to locations with unreliable or no grid supply.
• Hybrid: connected to the grid and also uses batteries, so it can provide backup during power cuts while still working with the grid.

Physical installation of a typical home rooftop system usually takes a few days once materials are ready. The complete process, including site assessment, design, approvals and net-meter installation by the electricity distribution company, can take longer and varies case by case. Larger commercial and industrial projects need more time.
