Overview of the Scheme

The scheme was launched by the Government of India in February 2024 to help households install rooftop solar and reduce electricity bills. It provides central financial assistance (CFA) for grid-connected residential rooftop systems, along with support such as concessional bank loans, and is implemented through a national online portal with the participation of electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs).

How Much Financial Assistance Is Available?

According to the Government of India’s published scheme information, household assistance is linked to the system size recommended for your average monthly consumption:

Average monthly consumptionSuitable plant capacityCentral financial assistance
0–150 units1–2 kW₹30,000 – ₹60,000
150–300 units2–3 kW₹60,000 – ₹78,000
Above 300 unitsAbove 3 kW₹78,000 (maximum)

Eligibility

As per the published scheme information, the applicant should:

  • Be an Indian citizen
  • Own a house with a roof suitable for installing solar panels
  • Have a valid electricity connection
  • Not have availed any other subsidy for solar panels

Meeting these conditions does not by itself guarantee approval — applications are assessed through the official process, including DISCOM feasibility.

Application Process

  1. Register on the national portal with your state, electricity distribution company, electricity consumer number, mobile number and email.
  2. Log in using your consumer number and mobile number, and apply for rooftop solar through the form.
  3. Wait for feasibility approval from your DISCOM.
  4. Install the plant through a vendor registered for the scheme in your DISCOM area.
  5. Submit plant details on the portal and apply for the net meter.
  6. Inspection and commissioning: after the net meter is installed and the DISCOM inspects the system, a commissioning certificate is generated on the portal.
  7. Submit bank details and a cancelled cheque through the portal to receive the subsidy in your bank account.

Official Portal and Verification Steps

  • Use only the official national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in, to register and track your application.
  • Check that your installer is listed as a registered vendor for your DISCOM area on the portal.
  • Be cautious of anyone asking for payment to “guarantee” subsidy approval — approval comes only through the official process.
  • Keep copies of all approvals, invoices and the commissioning certificate.

Relevant Residential Rooftop Requirements

  • The system must be grid-connected and installed on the applicant’s residential rooftop.
  • Installation is done by a registered vendor after DISCOM feasibility approval.
  • A net meter is installed and the system inspected before commissioning.
  • Equipment must meet the scheme’s technical requirements as notified on the portal.

Important Documents

The published process asks for your electricity consumer details at registration and bank account details with a cancelled cheque when claiming the subsidy. The portal may request other documents during the application — follow the checklist shown there, and keep recent electricity bills and identity/address proof ready.

How Subsidy Differs from Total Installation Cost

The subsidy is a fixed amount of assistance for eligible households — it is not the same as the price of your system. You agree the system price with your vendor, and the central assistance is credited to your bank account after commissioning, once approved. The final cost to you is the system price minus the assistance you actually receive.

Common Questions and Misconceptions

  • “Solar will make my electricity completely free.” Savings depend on your consumption, system size, generation and net-metering rules. Fixed charges may still apply.
  • “Everyone automatically gets the subsidy.” Only eligible applicants who follow the official process receive it.
  • “Bigger systems get proportionally more subsidy.” The household assistance is capped as per the scheme.
  • “Any installer will do.” To claim the subsidy, installation must be done by a vendor registered for the scheme.
